For the first time, the Carrera del Viento Cubico will take place in Uruguay, bringing this unique sporting event to the country. Participants will have the rare opportunity to run through an operational wind farm while supporting education in Uruguay.

On 18 September, the fifth edition of the Carrera del Viento Cubico was officially launched at a press conference held at the British Residence in Uruguay.

The race will take place on 9 November 2025 at Carapé Wind Farm in the department of Maldonado, with distances of 5K, 10K, and 21K. Open to runners of all levels — from professionals and amateurs to families and children — the event aims to create an inclusive space for sport, recreation, and community connection.

Event launch and participants

The press conference featured:

  • Malcolm Green, British Ambassador to Uruguay and host of the event

  • Javier Pérez del Castillo, Country Head for Uruguay at Cubico Sustainable Investments

  • Sofía Puig, Executive Director of Enseña Uruguay, the beneficiary organisation

  • Clarisse Bermúdez, Uruguayan runner and race ambassador, joined by Lali Moratorio and Natalie Bengoa

  • Fernando Silva, representing En Carrera, the event’s operating partner

  • Romina Przepiorka, master of ceremonies

During the event, Ambassador Malcolm Green highlighted the partnership between the British Embassy and the Carrera del Viento Cubico, underscoring the shared commitment to supporting education and reducing the educational gap in Uruguay. He also emphasised the role of sport as a driver of cooperation, sustainability, and learning.

Javier Pérez del Castillo, Cubico’s Country Head for Uruguay, spoke about the company’s ongoing commitment to renewable energy and sustainability, noting how initiatives like the Carrera del Viento help expand positive impact by bringing together key stakeholders from different sectors.

“In Uruguay, 99% of electricity generation comes from renewable sources,” he said, “and hosting this event at our Carapé Wind Farm is a proud reflection of those values — clean energy, environmental responsibility, and community participation.”

A race with purpose

Sofía Puig, Executive Director of Enseña Uruguay, expressed gratitude for being the beneficiary organisation of the Carrera del Viento Cubico. Enseña Uruguay has been working for over a decade to narrow the educational gap for adolescents in vulnerable contexts, reaching more than 12,000 students to date.

She explained how the funds raised from the race will directly support programmes and initiatives that help students complete their education and build better futures, reinforcing the powerful connection between sport, education, and community.

“Thanks to the Carrera del Viento, we’ll be able to bring more teachers with better tools to more schools — both formal and informal — helping students stay engaged and complete their education,” she said.

Sofía also noted that the event currently holds ‘Going for Green’ status, as it actively works toward certification from the Council for Responsible Sport — recognising events that demonstrate excellence in sustainability, social responsibility, equity, transparency, and community impact.

Sustainability in motion

Race ambassador Clarisse Bermúdez presented the official race t-shirt, designed and produced under circular economy principles by Shark Making Future, using recycled textiles from Texcom that transform PET bottles into fabric and significantly reduce water use in production.

“One kilogram of fabric equals 85 recycled plastic bottles and saves about 12 litres of water,” Bermúdez explained.

The race kits will also include tote bags made from repurposed rural silobag materials, crafted by women artisans from rural Uruguay in collaboration with Mare Sustentable, a local company turning agricultural waste into sustainable products. Each participant will also receive a biodegradable finisher cup made from sugarcane, which generates 50% less waste and reduces CO₂ emissions in its production.

The Carrera del Viento Cubico is currently working toward international certification from the Council for Responsible Sport, validating its commitment to caring for both people and the planet.
