Cubico Sustainable Investments officially launched the second edition of Carrera Del Viento, the Cubico Wind Race, at an event in Monterrey, Mexico, yesterday evening.

The race, which will take place on 19 February 2022, will once again be run on the stunning grounds of our 250 MW Mezquite wind farm in Mina, Nuevo Léon.

Mezquite is one of the largest wind farms in Mexico and provides clean energy for more than 100,000 Monterrey homes, contributing to the avoidance of more than 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Carrera Del Viento was created to complement the project’s environmental contribution by supporting the social advancement of its local communities, a key focus of Cubico’s corporate social responsibility programme.

Certified to the highest environmental and social standards by the Council for Responsible Sport, the event will raise awareness of renewable energy and sustainable practices, promote sport and health and contribute towards improving education standards for young people in Mexico.

All proceeds from registration fees will therefore go to our event partner Enseña por México, a non-profit organisation working to overcome educational inequality across the country.

More than 600 runners are expected to take part in the race, which takes place over 5, 10 and 21 kilometres to encourage inclusivity.

In keeping with the spirit of sustainability, runners will wear shirts made of 100% recycled plastic and receive reusable thermoses instead of medals on completion of the race.

The event’s main sponsor is Santander Corporate & Investment Banking, with other sponsors including Ritch Mueller, Rutas y Raíces and the Council for Responsible Sport, as well as the governments of Mina and Nuevo Léon.

In addition, Juan Luis Barrios, Mexican athlete and two-time Olympian, is the race ambassador.
